You'll find loads of tips on how to quit smoking all over the internet but to be honest half of them are just depressing.   Hearing stuff like try and avoid smokers or situations where you might feel tempted to smoke is just going to give people another reason to not give up.  If lots of your friends smoke and you have to avoid them then you are being told to give up your friends as well as cigarettes!  This is precisely the reason why so many people struggle to quit and it really doesn't have to be like this.
Look we all know cigarettes aren't good for us blah, blah, blah but all the negativity directed at smokers doesn't actually help.   Believe it or not giving up smoking can be simple, almost enjoyable and you certainly don't need to give anything else up - not your friends, places you like to go, nothing at all.  What you have to do is see smoking and the things you like about smoking for what they really are, forget all the rest of the stuff you don't need it.
  • When you give up don't avoid your friends that smoke - it will just feel like another reason to start smoking again
  • Similarly don't stop going to places you like where you used to feel like smoking
  • Try to keep your quit in proportion - all nicotine has left your body after a few days.
  • Learn all you can about smoking before you quit.  Try and analyse what you actually enjoy about smoking
  • Get some fresh air and exercise,  you'll feel better
  • Drink plenty of water and eat healthily - I promise you will not lose anything pleasurable at all when you give up smoking and here's why.

All the pleasures of smoking are just an illusion.Smokers associate cigarettes with feeling good, enjoying a drink with their friends, walking to work on a cold day having a smoke.  Everything and anything can be perceived as being made better with a cigarette.  This is because when a smoker is not smoking they are suffering from nicotine withdrawal symptoms which having a cigarette will cure briefly.
Imagine you're sitting in bar and you've run out of smokes and have no way of getting them.   You can't really enjoy your drink because you're thinking about smoking, your body is craving nicotine and the whole experience of sitting in the bar is made worse because you are not smoking.  So what you think is that you have a really rubbish  time in a bar without cigarettes.

That to have fun in a bar I needed to smoke - I needed cigarettes, and that is completely true but only if you are a smoker.  If you don't smoke, you're not suffering from the withdrawal of nicotine from your body so having a cigarette is ......well basically like sticking a piece of burning paper and leaves in your mouth.
Please Believe me - when I say
Absolutely every single benefit you think that smoking gives you (and I used to think) is completely false.  Every high, every pick-me-up, every relaxing moment that you get from a cigarette is because you're feeling bad/stressed/sad because the nicotine levels in your body are running low.  That's it, nothing else there is no other benefit other than reducing your craving.
You don't need anyone or anything to stop you smoking. You need to understand how cigarettes appear to make things better in your life. I used to think that I could never give up because of stress - I really did think this but was completely wrong - read my thoughts on this here ; Smoking stress
But whatever you read, whatever you believe, whatever you buy - it really doesn't matter as long as you give up smoking and live your life without a body full of poisons.

How to Quit Smoking Using Behavior Strategies - It Helped Me Quit Smoking

People pay a lot of money every year on "Quit Smoking" clinics, but not me. I wasn't trying to find-out how to quit smoking at first, I just wanted more money. I spotted an Ad in the Oregonian newspaper about an easy way to make more money, and I bought the book. But I got something that completely blew-me-away. It was self-improvement procedures that helped me change my behavior.
The formula changed me personality wise, so I thought, "Maybe it will help me quit smoking too." The self-improvement formula is designed to change thoughts on the subconscious level.
I'll tell you how to quit smoking in a moment; but let me tell you how I got hooked on nicotine. I first started inhaling smoke when I was a freshman in high school a few years ago. I puffed on cigarettes way back when I was about 8 or 9 years old.
The orphanage, in which I was raised from the age of 5 years, had a potato cellar. My friends and I would puff on cigarettes without actually inhaling the cigarette smoke.
I didn't start inhaling the smoke until I was in high school. One of the guys, who lived in the orphanage too, teased me about puffing on the cigarettes rather than inhaling the cigarette smoke. He played on the varsity football team, and I was only on the freshman squad, so I looked-up to him.
Human nature made me want to impress him, so I took a big drag off that cigarette and it literally knocked me on my butt; and I don't mean the cigarette butt either. He laughed, but it became easier to inhale cigarette smoke as I inured the nicotine addiction; and I became a nicotine addict at a very young age.
My desire, however; to be the best football player as I possibly could become, helped me quit smoking the summer before my senior-year in high school. I thought I'd be able to make more money playing pro-football than I could in almost any other job.
I picked up the bad habit of smoking cigarettes again, a few years after I left the orphanage. At that time my hope was to find a cigarette butt that somebody threw away, which was long enough to get a few drags from it.
Self-Improvement
Like I said, I wasn't trying to find out how to quit smoking; and it never occurred to that I could change the thoughts in my head, how to do it, or that I even wanted to change. But I found something that helped me quit smoking anyway.
One day I saw a full-page ad in a major Pacific northwestern newspaper, the Portland Oregonian. It was promoting an easy way to make more money, but I was a little surprised to find it was actually a book about how to perform 3 easy-to-do self-improvement skills to change my behavior.
I learned that I could change the thoughts in my subconscious mind. I found-out how to change the thoughts you never really hear when you think. It's not what you say when you go around talking to yourself in a sub-vocalization manner, which are words that are controlled by your subconscious mind. Rather, its it's the thoughts that control the way you act and react to others about 90% of the time.
I can tell you how to quit smoking; and that's to develop personality traits that will help you quit smoking by consistently applying simple self-help procedures, which are premeditated self-improvement behavior procedures, which can train you to change thoughts in your subconscious mind. Those self-improvement skills helped me change my behavior, and I was able to quit smoking.
Make More Money
I conditioned my subconscious mind; and therefore I changed thoughts in my conscious mind too. I began acting in a manner that most people enjoy. The ladies started acting like, "I'm glad to see you," rather than making excuses to get-away from me. It's hard, really hard when you're raised lacking a strong role-model and all alone, with nobody that really cares enough about you to teach you acceptable social behavior.
Anyway; I bought the book, which I believe may have been based on Aristotle Ethics, just because I wanted an easy way to make more money. But my conscious reaction to others in my everyday life changed because I re-programmed my mind to act more ethically. I developed self-esteem and built self-confidence simply by using 3 easy-to-do premeditated and strategic activities.
I changed my thoughts on the subconscious level, and that caused my subconscious "triggers" to start making opportunities for me to make more money because I began to behave the way I truly want to behave.
The break that I was looking for, which was an easy way to make more money, isn't as important to me as is gaining the ability to develop my leadership skills, and I've finally found happiness. Joyfully, I also found a way to make more money than I ever could in a regular job.

A lot of smokers manage to actually convince themselves that cigarettes taste nice, this is especially noticeable when trying to quit, however, when they actually smoke one, they realise that it's not nice, remember this point, when you think that you actually want a smoke, remember that it's just your mind trying to "trick" you into having one.
=> Realise the great benefits that will come from not smoking, think about how it will affect your life in such a positive way, think about how great you will feel, these things will, or at least should, motivate you to achieve your goal of quitting smoking.

How often do you take action to smoke a bowl compared to as a reaction? How often is the ritual of smoking pot coming from a reaction to something: A bad day, a fight with your partner, an inconsolable sadness or rage. How often does it come from a seeming NEED to get high and zone out, a compulsion brought on my troubles or by habit compared to perhaps what it was like early on when it was exciting and fun. Those that tally up way more on the reaction scale may find the reason behind the need for their addiction from the troubles that beset them and realize that the drug is just an escape and the problems behind it are what really needs to be solved. Some may find it easier to work on the reason behind the need first and others may take heart that a deeper understanding of your personal demons can give you the strength to quit smoking weed which will allow you to face those challenges with a clearer head and more success. This is action, control of your own life rather than a reaction to compulsion and external influences which is reaction and as the quote said makes you a slave to it and to marijuana in turn.
Plan
As you may have guessed I am a fan of the written word and the practical application of words on paper may be paramount here. The choice to actively seek a solution to your problems and a change in your life to quit smoking pot will propel you forward but how to do this comes down to planning, goals and motivation. The catch 22 of this is that when you are an addict sticking with a plan and keeping motivation and goals can be difficult and a single bad day can feel mix up all of this in your head and suddenly a single smoke does not seem so evil, then another and suddenly a week has gone before you realize it and the self loathing sets in. STOP! That is the direction you do not want to take and you know it! This is where ink can be a help if not your salvation because a psychological addiction is something in your mind, if you keep all your plans in your mind it is bounds to be influences by the negative thoughts that will plague you so why would you want the pure and good new ideas being corrupted there. My advice is to write things down, write down all the bad things about smoking pot, write down all the good things that will come from being weed free, write down you plan of attack whether it be quitting cold turkey or gradually limiting your smoking down to none at all. Write it down and keep it because those words do not change no matter how much your demands mess with your mind your pledge taken at your most insightful and enlightened point will always be there to set you back on the track you know you want to be on.
Persistence Outweighs Performance
Some people may have an easy time when quitting a marijuana habit but others may not, there are so many variables in this mix it is impossible to predict but there is one truth to it and that is that the end outcome of being free of your addiction is worth more than any failures you have along the way. Most people who try to quit any addictive behavior do not do so on their first try, nor their second and many more beyond that often. This is disheartening and depressing but it does not need to be if you do not want it to be. Every time you fall, every time you give in, every time you blunder on your goal to giving up weed you learn something new about yourself and about the world and each of those experiences is ammunition for the next fight. Victory goes to those who persist and learn and adapt and survive so when you call your performance on quitting into question remember it is not how easy it is, it is if you make it in the end and if you maintain the drive despite the pitfalls that will ensure your success.
